自从5月6日吴军及西北大学两学生与高山走散后，剩下的三人相依为命，终于爬到海拔3500多米的玉皇池。此时，三人已经耗尽了所有的力所。原本是想来个居高临下寻归路，可现在，除了耳畔呼啸的寒风，满目连绵的群山和脚下湿滑的陡坡外，什么也没有。天越来越冷了，连续数日粒米未进的他们相互搀扶着，躲进一座破庙里，在饥寒交迫中睡着了。
5月7日，太白山狂风大作，气候奇寒，根本无法出行，三人只好又在庙中忍了一天。
5月8日，他们决心作最后的拼搏。遗憾的是吴军右脚几天前就已摔伤，现在肿胀异常，疼痛难忍，他自知已无力下山了，为了不使别人为难，他只好痛苦地与王忠民和韩瑞洒泪相别，又躲进破庙里。
王、韩二人在踉踉跄跄地走出几十里路后，终因体力不支，先后昏倒在地。苍天有眼!幸与被内蒙林学院的一群上山采标本的大学生发现，他俩才脱离了危险。
5月9日，几科虚脱了的吴军挣扎着打开庙门，发现外面已经白雪皑皑。面对这银妆素裹的美丽世界，他已丝毫没有欣赏的兴致了。他抓了几把雪，塞进嘴里，这是他唯 一可以吃的东西了。然后，他退回庙里，他昏了过去。

杨红霞吃力地扶起郁辉，缓缓地移动着，直到他们都瘫倒在地上。太白山的夜晚，冷得出奇。杨红霞坐在昏死过去的郁辉身边，慢慢睡着了。
5月6日天刚亮，杨红霞迷迷糊糊睁开眼，猛然发现离她几米远的地方，郁辉趴在地上，一动不动。她赶忙过去，连推带喊。可是，群山间只荡着她悲恸、绝望的声音，郁辉再也没有睁开眼睛。就在郁辉告别人世的地方，杨红霞整整守了6天6夜，仅靠河水维持生命。望着苍茫的天空和周围的万丈深渊，她渐渐感到了死神的临近……
5月11日，救援队在“将军石”一带搜索过一遍，结果一无所获。可是雷樊张等人行前曾听高山说，在一块四、五百米高的巨石前与郁辉他们分手，所以雷樊张断定分手地点就是“将军石”。5月12日，他们又来河水声，传到了已呈半昏 迷状的杨红霞的耳朵里。她那已经黯淡下去的目光一下子亮了起来，拼出全部力气喊道：“我……在这儿!”
当救援队员高大的身影出现在杨红霞的面前时，她失声痛哭起来。
