五、“神话”中的科学道理
太白山上，常年寒冷，天气多变，岩石怪异，湖水神奇，山高路险，攀登不易。古代天旱时，人们常上山拜神求雨。特别是自唐代以后的封建帝王，一时封山为王，一时封池为侯，于是太白山在人们的心目中，就成为一座神秘莫测的“仙山圣地”，有关太白山的神话、传说也就纷至沓来。直到现在，当地老人仍习惯把云雾叫“神帐”，把风叫“维维”，把雨叫“沙沙”，把雪叫“面沙子”。古代有关太白山气候方面的一些传闻，现在分析起来，并非都是神话，其中确实有不少科学道理。
《水经注》中，曾写到“山下军行不得鼓角，鼓角则疾风雨至”。太白山中、高山区，空气湿度大，常有云雨，呜鼓角，放枪炮，甚至高喊大叫，都会使云中的小水滴、小冰晶受到振动而相互碰撞、合并，体积逐渐变大，最后以雨的形式降落下。在高山上，一般不能大声说话的道理就在这里。
“南山瀑布，非朝即暮严”，这可以说是一条很有科学道理的古气象谚语。太白山北坡，最大降水高度在海拔1900米附近的中山地带。这里常年云雾缭绕，降水量多，因此，每当看到积雨云象瀑布那样在半山腰翻滚奔腾时，很快就会下雨。这里所说的声“南山瀑布”，实际上指的是横在太白山带腰上的积雨云。秦岭山区群众常说的“不怕高山戴帽，就怕拦腰一道”，也是这个意思。
《眉县志》中，记有：“池有潜龙，其上常最雾笼罩”。意思是说太白山的湖面上，经常被云雾笼罩着。太白山高山区，常年气温很低，湖面上蒸发的水蒸汽到大气中后，很快就凝结成雾滴，在静风时，雾气会长时间地笼罩湖面。至于说到龙，那却是不会有的。过去人们之所以把云雾叫“神帐”，可能和龙的这一神话有关。
《眉县志》中，还记有：三太白海“其旁不可久（甜心），久则雷雨交作”。太白山高山区，七、八月间，天气瞬息万变。1979年8月，一支气象考察队在一天之内，就遇上四晴、四阴、四雨的变化。由于天气多变，故在高山上考察，一个地方往往不能呆得太久。懂得了科学道理，人们就能破除迷信，解放思想，按照客观规律办事。
六、登山须记四件事
攀登太白山，进行科学考察，饱尝大自然之美，确实是一件非常有意义的事；但是如不注意气候条件的影响，匆忙登山，有时不仅达不到预期的目的，而且还有可能造成不应有的损失。因此，登山必须记住四件事；选好时机应抓紧，登山需备四季装，雨中少行防落石，高山反应莫惊慌。
每年七月上旬至八月中句，山下炎热，山上凉爽，晴天较多，最宜登山。登山前注意收听天气预报，选择好登山时间。由于山上天气多变，因此上山后一定要抓紧时间。
太白山的夏季，山下热，中心凉，高山泠。1979年七月下旬，山下平均气温27.4℃，而海拔2000米的中山区约为17℃，海拔3000米的高山区约为13℃，拔仙台仅仅只有7一8℃，再加上高山上日温差大，天气多变，有时气温可降到0℃以下，因此过去常有体弱衣薄的登山者不幸冻倒山颠，所以登山需备四季装以及雨具。
在平安寺以上，山坡上石河极为发育，每当下雨和响雷，陡峭崖壁上之松动岩块，有时因受到振动而坠落，因此天雨时，一般不要在悬崖之下行走。如果要行走，那一定要百倍警惕，严防山上落石伤入。
高山上空气稀薄，氧气含量相应减少。在中纬地区，一般超过海拔2500米，人的机体便会因缺氧而产生一系列不适应症状，象呼吸短促，疲乏无力，头晕头痛，恶心呕吐，心动过速，严重时鼻腔出血，甚至出现高山昏迷。这些反应一般在一周内，由于逐渐适应了环境而自行缓解和消失，因此，如遇到高山反应切莫惊慌。高山上紫外线辐射很强，野外工作一定要有遮阳设备，皮肤长时间暴露在阳光之下，可引起光照性皮炎和太阳光眼炎。据测定，海拔2000米处，水的沸点93.8℃；海拔3000米处，水的沸点为91.2℃；海拔4000米处，水的沸点为88.8℃。太白山拔仙台水的沸点为89℃，所以在太白山高山区作较长时间考察时，还应配备高压锅之类的炊具。
