巧合的是，我第一次在洋县草坝巢区见到归巢的朱鹮时，恰巧也是七只，只见七只朱鹮排成一个优美的纵队，披戴着灿烂的夕阳从天际缓缓飞来，梦幻般地掠过我眼前的天空，那场面真是美妙极了。此后，我经常在野外观察到七只朱鹮构成的群体，于是猜想，这神奇的“7”字背后到底蕴涵着怎样的深层意义?究竟是一种什么样的力量在操控着这种乌儿的传奇命运。
为什么朱鹮在大面积消失的同时却独独在洋县存留下来，科学家分析，主要是当地经济落后，较少使用农药化肥，并且一直保留着传统落后的耕作方式，大面积闲置的冬水田为朱鹮越冬提供了必要保障。此外，当地村民将朱鹮视为吉祥乌，没有人去主动伤害它，这也是朱鹮能够存留下来的一个重要原因。
因为朱鹮的存在，位于秦岭南麓的洋县被誉为中华大地上最后的一片净土。
当然，为了保护这最后的朱鹮种群，洋县群众也为之付出了巨大的代价，在朱鹮巢区内禁止使用农药，不准翻耕冬水田等等……在一定程度上制约了当地经济的发展。当然，朱鹮用独特的方式回馈洋县人民，比如带动了当地旅游业的发展，比如以朱鹮大米代表的无公害的商品走向市场，朱鹮已经成为一种地方知名品牌。
朱鹮会重蹈覆辙走向灭绝吗？随着洋县野生朱鹮种群的数量由最初的七只增长到400多只，加上人工饲养种群更是超过了800只，现在已经可以为朱鹮的生存命运松一口气了。然而，灭绝的危机却依然存在。在我们没有彻底弄清楚朱鹮大范围消亡的原因之前，这个危机会随时袭来，依然脆弱的朱鹮种群并没有完全摆脱种群灭绝的危险。
从生物学上看，朱鹮是一个十分古老的物种，其生物机能的退化是不争的事实这也就是为什么在同样环境条件下，当朱鹮大量消亡的同时，白鹭、苍鹭等伴生物种却族群兴旺。当然，我们在洋县观察拍摄野生朱鹮时，也有一些令人振奋的发现，野生朱鹮的生存能力看起来并不比其它鸟类差多少。它们或许正在努力适应自然环境的种种变化。从某种意义上说，朱鹮的命运取决于人类的态度，更取决于它们自身的进化努力。相信会有那么一天，从洋县飞出的这七只朱鹮，会让它们的子孙后代重新遍布于整个东亚地区甚至更广阔的区域。
